Privacy notice

Lumi is a tutor that teaches out loud and writes on a board as it goes. To do that it needs to hear you, read what you give it, and remember how you like to be taught. This notice says exactly what we collect, why, who helps us process it, and how to get it back or deleted.

What we collect

• Your account: your name and email address, from Google or the sign-in link we email you. We never see a password.
• How you like to learn: what you study and at what level, your subjects, courses, grades and exam dates, and anything you tell us about how you learn best — including support needs, if you choose to share them.
• Your lessons: what you ask for, a written transcript of what you and Lumi said, what went on the board, and the files, photos and links you attach. Your microphone is streamed to our tutoring model while a lesson is live; we keep the transcript, not a recording.
• What Lumi learns about teaching you: short notes written after a lesson about what helps you — never a record of everything you covered.
• Practice and progress: your answers to practice questions and how they were marked.
• Payments: handled by Stripe. We receive whether you have paid and your plan; we never see or store your card.
• Usage: minutes of tutoring used, so we can apply your plan’s limits.

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to remember small preferences on your device. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.

Why we use it

To provide the tutoring you signed up for (performing our contract with you); to keep the service secure, working and fairly used (our legitimate interests); and to meet our legal obligations. Support needs are only ever used to teach you in the way you asked for.

Who helps us

• Supabase — our database, sign-in and file storage, hosted in London.
• Vercel and Render — run the website and the live lesson connection.
• Google (Gemini) — the live tutor you talk to, reading YouTube links, drawing pictures, and finding relevant notes from past lessons.
• OpenAI — planning lessons, reading uploaded files, writing lesson notes, practice and revision resources, and drawing some pictures.
• Stripe — payments.

Each processes your data only to provide their part of the service, under a contract with us. Google and OpenAI process some data in the United States under the UK’s approved safeguards for international transfers. We use their paid services, under which your lessons are not used to train their models.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your lessons, files, notes and profile are erased and your sign-in is removed. Payment records are kept by Stripe for as long as the law requires.

Your rights

You can see, correct, download and delete your data at any time: download everything from Settings → Your data, and delete your account from the same place. You can also ask us to restrict or stop processing, or object to it — use Help in the app. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

Young people

Lumi is built for secondary school students and above. You must be 13 or older to make an account, and if you are under 18 you should have a parent or guardian’s permission. We collect only what the tutoring needs, set things to the most private option by default, and never sell data or show adverts.

Changes

If we change this notice in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it applies. Questions? Use Help in the app.
